We welcome new members twice a year beginning the first Wednesday after Labor Day and the first Wednesday after New Year's Day. The first few rehearsals of our fall or spring semesters allow prospective members to experience the Mendelssohn Club prior to auditions.
Interested tenors and basses are invited to participate in the first few rehearsals in September or January to become acquainted with members, music, and the conductor. After the first few sessions (usually three or four), candidates are asked to demonstrate their musical ability before the Auditions Committee comprised of the conductor and representatives from all four voice parts. Auditionees are asked to perform their part from selections currently in rehearsal.
Rehearsals are held from 7:15 - 9:30 PM every Wednesday evening, beginning in early September. Mendelssohn Club rehearses at the New Covenant Church, 916 Western Avenue, Albany. There is a 2-3 week break between the Holiday Concert in December and resumption of rehearsals in January for the Spring Concert in May. The Club does not rehearse during the summer.
The Mendelssohn Club is a self-supporting, non-profit organization yet it must generate sufficient income to present two subscription concerts and pay expenses of music purchases, salaried staff, hall rental, insurance, and vocal awards. The Club collects annual dues from members to pay the initial expenses.
Club attire for major concerts is formal and consists of black tuxedo with one of several cummerbund and tie color options. For less formal performances, a Club approved blue blazer, slacks, and striped tie are worn with white shirt and black shoes. Members are expected to purchase the tuxedo and blazer ensembles at Club cost. After completion of the payment, the attire belongs to the member. Further details and payment options will be explained by the chairman of the Wardrobe Committee during new member orientation.
